Ikigai (pronounced “eye-ka-guy”) is an ancient Japanese philosophy that focuses on your lifestyle, your bliss, your passions, and the true balance of it all.
Many have grown fond of this philosophy and applied it to their career path. It makes us think about how we can do what we love and get paid for it. The absolute dream, right?
The younger generation has really latched on to this concept and is creating a life around its main focus.
The main philosophy
As you see in the image above, ikigai’s philosophy surrounds the overall answers to:
A. What you love
B. What the world needs
C. What you can be paid for
D. What you are good at
When you have the answers to all of these questions, at the intersection of all of them is your ikigai, your life’s purpose. ? It can truly transform the way you live, what you do for a living, and your entire mindset!
Let’s go through the questions together and discover YOUR ikigai – don’t forget to grab your journal and pencil!

Find the things that truly light you up and make a list.
What does the world need?
Now that we have your passions listed, it’s time to think about what the world, your friends, your neighbors, your community need.
How can your favorite hobby become desirable? What problems can you solve?
What can you be paid for?
Do your research! Start looking for others that have your same passion and see how they have built a life or career around it.
Who are they serving?
What problem are they solving?
Are there many people already doing what you want to do or is there a NEED for what you have to give?
You’ll want to ask if you can see yourself waking up every morning, working on your passion, and sharing it with the world.
What are you good at?
What you love and what you are good at are two separate things.
In your list of passions, which ones are you an expert with?
All of us want to live a full, long, happy, healthy life. It’s like they always say: “you’ll never work a day in your life if you’re doing what you love.“
The reality of that is no matter what you do, there are going to be hard days and you will have challenges. But creating a plan and going for your goals is the first step.
