“Visualization is daydreaming with a purpose.” – Bo Bennett
Hey friends! Today, we are talking about creating a vision board! What it is, why it’s important and how you can make one that will actually work.
The Internet, social media, advertisements–they all have a purpose. To visually inspire you to make certain decisions, to lean in a certain direction emotionally. Ultimately, those visuals can inspire, encourage, stimulate, motivate, and ignite your psyche.
It’s like a visual GPS–you create something visual for yourself that will ultimately guide you toward the path you want to go.
And here’s how:
What is a vision board?
Pictures and symbols have power.
Therefore, a vision board is a fun way to use images and words to evoke that positive emotion inside of you. It’s literally a board that causes you to FEEL your dreams come to life. In other words, it’s a collage of pictures and words that align with those dreams.
We’ve previously talked about the laws of the universe that can help you “master life” by creating goals that align with your desires and dreams. The law of attraction is the most well-known, and it reminds you that like attracts like. The positive things you focus on will naturally manifest.
A vision board is a collection of those positive things that helps you step into your power, and puts them out into the universe!
Why a vision board?
Let’s get scientific for a sec. You have something called a reticular activating system (RAS). This system acts as a type of filter for information. From the time you SEE it to the time it gets to your brain, your reticular activating system has already decided what information is most important to let through.
So, you can just imagine what a vision board can do for you! It puts you in the driver’s seat of your own RAS, allowing only those visuals that motivate, encourage positive thinking, and create impactful drive within you into your psyche.
Don’t you want to be in the driver’s seat of your own life?!
How to create a vision board that WORKS
Alright, it’s time to get busy. Follow the 6 steps below to create a vision board that will actually work!
Step 1: Gain clarity 🔮
Creating a vision board is such a personal process and that’s why it’s imperative that you know what you want your dream life to be like.
If you’re not quite sure, our Find Your Purpose blog series is a great way to start understanding what life you want to be living.
To start with, ask yourself the important questions:
- When do you feel the happiest?
- Who/What inspires you?
- What motivates you?
- What does it mean to you to be living the best life?
- What makes you feel accomplished?
- If you had three wishes, what would they be?
- If you could be anywhere, where would you be? If you looked around, what would you see?
Remember–the best life is a life that is aligned with your SOUL!
Step 2: Dream big ✨
You can’t feel like an imposter in your own life.
It’s time to let go of your fears and whatever else is holding you back, and to release your imagination! The sky’s the limit!
Don’t focus on the HOW, focus on the WHAT.
It may take small steps to get to your big dream. That’s okay. Don’t limit your dreams just because you’re afraid of the journey or the how of it all. Leave it to the Universe to figure out.
Remember–vision board is for dreaming BIG. It’s a fun, visible roadmap to your WILDEST dreams.
Step 3: Focus on connection & emotion 😊
When choosing your photos, words, quotes, etc., focus on how they make you FEEL.
It’s not about photoshopping yourself into a magazine cover, or adding your face to a photo of a celebrity. It’s about feelings and instant emotional response that this photo or this quote evokes in you.
You want images and words that represent you and your dream-driven journey. So that, as soon as you take a glance at it, you immediately know what it means to you.
The idea is that when you look at your vision board, you’re not thinking about it. You’re FEELING it.
Step 4: Choose the right tool ⚒️
Are you a digital or “I want to touch it” type of gal?
Creating your vision board is your own project, so use what you like and what works best for you.
If you want to go digital, Pinterest is amazing. Feel free to check out Breverie’s account on Pinterest for inspiration, or simply search for whatever interests you.
Canva is another great digital tool that has templates and images to inspire your board. You can even print your digital creation when you’re done if you’d like!
If you are more of a hands-on doer, then grab a posterboard, glue, and all the magazines. Or, for a vintage photo look, use instant camera to take photos of the things around you!
Above all, it’s personal. So do it your own way.
Step 5: Use it daily 📅
Now, it’s not going to do any good if you create a beautiful vision board and then leave it in a closet somewhere!
Take your dream life vision board and put it somewhere that you’ll see it every day. Make looking at it a daily ritual. In the morning, when you get home from work, or before you go to sleep.
Focus on one photo or quote at a time and imagine yourself living them.
You could even include it in your meditation routine. Just remember, it should be a stress-free, fun addition to your day-to-day.
Just as you created the vision board, create the time to soak in all the visual reminders of your goals.
Step 6: Leave the HOW to the universe 💫
Remember–with this project, you are only focusing on the WHAT and the WHY. It’s the Universe’s job to take care of the HOW. So let it.
Let go of control, don’t think about the timing and allow your dreams to manifest into your reality. The Universe will make it happen at the right time–when you are ready for it.
Just like you are as a human being, your vision board is constantly evolving. Feel free to change it up when life points you in a new direction. Add or subtract–it’s all about you and what’s right at the time.
In short, THRIVE with VISION!
